As I sit here typing, I am handing Oscar one cheerio at a time. I am marveling at his ability to grasp one little cheerio in his chubby little fingers and stuff it into his toothy/gummy mouth. And he is looking pretty pleased about it too. Everytime he successfully makes it to his mouth he gets this GINOURMOUS self-satisfied grin on his face. I could just eat it up!
I love these quiet peaceful moments in the morning. Before Makayla wakes up, before I make Jordan tea or wake him up. It's just me and Oscar. Reading a book, browsing the internet or laughing at each other through our fingers.
He is crawling like a maniac now. It's great! Although sometimes he follows me around crying and that's not so great. Like a dog that gets under your feet when it wants to be fed, I trip over him a lot. It's getting so I can't carry an armload of laundry ANYWHERE!
The best part of him crawling is that now he chases Makayla, then she chases him back. It is adorable to watch.
I love that my kids get a long! She is such a wonderful big sister!
The other day, on our way home from an outing Oscar would not stop crying/screaming! We had tried everything (well everything you can in a moving car on the interstate) and finally I gave up. Jordan yelled "Oscar BE QUIET!"
It didn't make him be quiet, but Makayla said "Daddy, don't yell at Oscar, he's just a baby"
What a sweet spirit! What a smart girl. No one had ever told her not to yell at Oscar because he was a baby. But somehow she knew that it wasn't right, and the reason why it wasn't right.
Makayla is in love with babies right now. Anything that she can wrap in a blanket, or any scrap of cloth (yesterday it was a fruit snack wrapper in her underwear?) is suddenly and magically a baby. She has been carrying around a lot of rocks/babies lately. Funny, because she actually has a lot of DOLLS, but she is such a mother to everything that she can't stand idely by while a leaf or stick goes unloved, or unswaddled.
She is mostly potty trained. She still has about one "accident" a day, normally a very smelly one :-P Which I find bizarre? You think that would be the easy one to remember, "Hey, I'm going potty!" But we haven't had any accidents outside the home lately. And she always is very upset if she has trouble getting her pants down she starts yelling "I don't want to pee on the floor! I don't want to pee on the floor!" So I rush in and help her :-)
She is my little trouble maker with selective hearing though. She knows how to open the screen door to our second floor balcony, and our front door. So she goes onto the balcony, throws something down and goes out the front door, down the stairs to get it. It's a little exasperating. The handle on our frount door doesn't work with a child proof knob and she also knows how to unlock both doors. No amount of spankings, yellings or timeouts have stopped this horrible habit either! Between Jordan and I we are completely unsure how to break it too!
I am so lucky that I have these months completely to my kids and my sewing. I am kind of dreading doing office work again. I know it's not much effort, and really I shouldn't complain comparetively, but have you ever tried doing office work with a trouble making 2 year old and a mobile exploring baby who both HATE it when you do office work? No amount of treats helps. And really there's only so much yelling I want to do during the day and it doesn't seem to make any of us happier or make the job easier when I do yell. Oh well, we will see how it goes and cross that bridge when we get there :-)
Thanks for staying with this post. I promise some day I will be posting regularly again, and with pictures. Until then at least you can HEAR about the kids :-)
wow, that's tough about her going out the front door--maybe install a chain lock? :-) good luck with that. that is the cutest thing about her treating everything like a baby. so adorable!
ReplyDeleteI thought this was great. The little things that a lot of times we forget but are just as sweet to remember, even the hard ones!!! You have two VERY sweet kids!
ReplyDeleteI love the all about kids post! I think you should get one of those "hotel latch" things that go up high on the door. We had one for Tyler cuz he would just open the front door and run down the street! not cool!
ReplyDeleteThat is so sweet that Makayla calls everything a baby. She has such a good imagination too! I think you are such a great mom!! I still wish we lived closer to craft and do play groups together! maybe someday...
beautifully written, naomi. you flow so well in your posts. and i adore your honesty about the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to mothering. i get very sick of seeing people on their blogs/facebook talk about how amazing it is to be a parent. it's never about he hardships that come along with it. you are doing amazingly and you need to remind yourself that you are doing all that you can. love you!
ReplyDeleteaww! this makes me SOO happy I have a girl! I hope she's like your sweet little Makayla! ahh, that mothering instinct, wish my boys had a little of that, (guess that's what I get for being terrified to have a girl) haha :) awesome post btw, now I remember what I've been missing the past few weeks, I need to get all caught up on some of my favorite reads, your blog! :)
