Homemade Goodness

Subject: Homemade Goodness

So lately Jordan and I have been trying to live on a budget and try to buy food for less, and less of it! With all of our traveling we end up wasting a lot of food and it's our new goal to buy a little better. Part of that is also eating better. (Interesting new concept!)

Anyway, my point is lately I've been making our bread, I'm not sure if it's actually cheaper ($1 for bread is pretty cheap) BUT it tastes really expensive! So I thought I'd share the recipe with you since it's fall and fall is the best time for baking :-)
Also I tend to have a lot of these things on hand anyway so it's cheap for us and when I can't make it to the store, an easy way to make bread!

Homemade Sandwich Bread
2 cups water
1 TBS yeast
2 1/2 TBS Granulated sugar
2 1/2 TBS oil
1 TBS salt
6-7 cups flour

Combine all ingredients using 3 cups of the flour, mix until smooth. Add flour till the dough isn't sticky and knead 7 minutes (kneading is always my favorite part!) Let rise for 30 min, punch dough down & divide in half. Form 2 loaves, place in oiled loaf pans (turning over to coat both sides) cover with clean dish towel (linen is the BEST! Great for rising dough AND drying dishes!) Rise till double in size (45-60 min)
Bake @ 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
Remove from pan and brush tops with butter.
Voila!
For an even more fun crust, before you pop it in the oven, mix one egg with a ts of water and brush the top with that! Yummy!

But I like the recipe because it doesn't use eggs so it saves me more! I always feel like we go through eggs SO fast in our family!

I hope you enjoy the bread as much as we do! Great for sandwiches!

  1. oh! looks like a great recipe--i need to start baking more now that Landon is older--that's one of the earliest memories that i have of my mom-is of all the baking of bread she would do! and ps-thanks for the comment about fam pics--i had a hard time posting some of them because i was so critical of the way i looked--sometimes it's so hard to deal with the fact that i don't have a 16-yr-old body anymore...but maybe someday?! :-) thanks for being such a good friend! when are we ever going to meet up in the Valley again?!
