Welcome to Jamestown!

Some of the wives out here got together and made the long trek out to Jamestown, it was SO much fun, SO incredibly cool, and SO historically awesome!

There are 2 main parts to Jamestown, Historic and Actual.

Historic Jamestown is a recreation of all the houses, fences and people that were there. Really, there are people walking around in old fashioned clothes, some of them soldiers! And they are super nice answering your questions, baking bread, guarding the fort ;-)

Actual Jamestown is where they are excavating the ACTUAL Jamestown of so long ago! So you can go see where they ACTUALLY lived :-) 

Both are SUPER neat! So go, go go!

Actual Jamestown

Jamestown is the oldest surviving Settlement in America.

What does that mean? 

It was the first place that people landed and actually SURVIVED and thrived!

That is pretty amazing.

Who wouldn't want to settle here? Seriously!

We watched Disney's Pocahontas before we went to Jamestown, 

to give the kids a little history of course ;-) hehehe!

They were super excited to go see Pocahontas until their Dad told them she was gone.

Luckily for us we found her statue... so they were pretty stoked to prove their Dad wrong ;-)

 Here is one of the original buildings.

The first church they built was made out of branches and sails. It was one of the first buildings they constructed as quickly as they could because they wanted a place to worship.

Later they made a brick church where you can still see some of the brick they used about 400 years ago! It was so awesomely inspiring to be there, these people went through so much, but their first priority always seemed to be a place to worship and thank the Lord for their blessings.

These are some of the graves around the church. They have also found a lot of the original graves underneath other building sites. The anthropologists think this was to hide how many people there were and how many were dying from the Natives. There was a journal record of the first Settler killed by a native via an arrow in the leg. Later when they were excavating a building site they discovered a grave of a young teenage boy with an arrow head next to his femur bone! They discovered the first Settle killed by a Native! How amazing is that! (see journaling is important!)

Now Historic Jamestown is broken into 3 parts.

The Settlers, The Boats and The Indians.

 They even have SUPER DUPER HEAVY armour for you to try on! Oscar had a blast with that part!

We had so much fun in Jamestown. I am really hoping to get a chance to go back! There is so much we didn't get to explore! Especially at Actual Jamestown. It is so much fun being on the East coast with all of this history at our fingertips!
